The First Day: Rules, Presentations, and Activities

I'm teaching K-12th grade Studio Art (and Digital Art) this year. I'm gonna have a whole two weeks of First Days.

I thought I'd share with you a brief overview of what I'm doing and my presentations. Feel free to download my presentations from Slideshare (just follow the links), and edit for your own use!

K-5th Grade
I'll welcome my students with this presentation which includes a bit about me and my rules. I used the Minions to help demonstrate rules (there are animations. You will have to download the presentation from Slideshare in order to view the animations):

Then, we're gonna talk about portraits and avatars. The first studio-art project will be to make a small, 6 inch x 6 inch self-portrait. I will combine all the portraits to make one larger artwork/mural. The first digital art-project will be to make an online avatar for usage in their Google Chrome accounts.

6th-12th grade
I'll welcome my students with this presentation. I used popular internet memes and gif to help illustrate the rules (there are animations. You will have to download the presentation from Slideshare in order to view the animations):

Then, we're gonna define Art using this presentation:

Finally, we will answer the question of "what is art" in our own works and make a collaborative piece using sticky notes.

  1. Thanks for the ideas! I love the idea of using gifs and memes... so relevant to the pop culture of students these days. What world records did you break?? : )
