Matisse-Inspired Tempera Resist

mix of neon and regular colors

I've been dying to try tempera resist in my classroom ever since a colleague showed me a few (amazing) works by her students wherein they utilized the method. Unfortunately, my colleague and I are both super busy, and I didn't have time to talk with her about tempera resist. Instead, I viewed a few online tutorials and underwent the process myself. I loved it.

My students used tempera resist to create artworks inspired by Matisse. Below, you can view two videos I made to model for my students. The first one is rather long, and I showed it in halves over the course of two class periods.

I'm really proud of their results! And, they were really sweet and wonderful about being my "little guinea pigs." We used regular tempera colors and neon tempera colors. We used the neon colors more as an afterthought. . . But, the students who used neon made my favorite works.
