Yesterday, I went to the SCBWI (Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators) Southern Breeze (GA, TN, and FL) chapter's illustration workshop. The workshop was designed to help those of us trying to break into the field. I cannot believe how much I learned.
Donna German from Sylvan Dell Publishing was there (!!!!!!) as well as several established illustrators there, and everyone offered feedback and advice. There was so. much. valuable. information to be had. Illustrator Mark Braught (who is super nice) offered advice on portfolios and even had a little ahead-of-time assignment to give folks the feel of working as an illustrator. Illustrator Elizabeth Dulemba organized the entire event, and also provided excellent feedback and aid (and she is promoting her new book, so go and check that out).
Also, I met some very cool illustrators there too. Another illustrator trying to get his foot in the door is Jeremy Devans. His work is amazing.
All of this is to say how wonderful and incredibly inviting the illustrator world seems to be. I just have to say, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort of everyone involved and I can't wait to attend the SCBWI Southern Breeze conference in two weeks. I believe there is still room for more sign-ups, so if you are interested you should attend. Also, Elizabeth indicated that there is a possibility for more workshops if we are able to increase attendance. . . So, next time come out and join us.
